Associação Norte Cultural (“Cultural North Association”), ANC, was established in 1992, product of the initiative of a group of concerned citizens committed to contributing towards cultural development across northern Portugal, through the creation of a Regional Orchestra. Its founding members were: the City Councils of Alijó, Bragança, Vila Real, Guimarães, Vieira do Minho, Póvoa de Lanhoso, Montalegre, Terras de Bouro, Torre de Moncorvo, Caminha, Chaves and Fafe. The Foundations “Casa de Mateus” and “Cupertino de Miranda”, José Ferreira Lobo, Helder Machado, Antonieta Dias, António Ferreira Lobo, José Luis Pinto Vieira, José António Mota Alves also integrate its host of founders.
Winner of the first contest for the creation of Regional Orchestras, hosted by the Secretary of State for Culture, it is responsible for Orquestra do Norte’s management, namely via program-contracts and formulating protocols with municipalities.
In consonance with its statutes, ANC was headquartered in the cities of Fafe (1992-1993), Guimarães (1994-1995), Vila Real (1996-1997), Penafiel (1998-2000) and, since 2001, in Amarante.
The result of ANC’s activity in collaboration with municipalities, public and private institutions, since 1992 to the present day, has yielded the systematic realization of Concerts and Opera with a yearly average of 50,000 spectators.
